Data processing

 DATA
Data can exist in a variety of forms -- as numbers or text on pieces of paper, as bits and bytes stored in electronic memory, or as facts stored in a person's mind. Strictly speaking, data is the plural of datum, a single piece of information.
Data processing

"Data processing" means any operation performed on the data such as collection, use, management or disclosure.

Operations performed on a given set of data to extract the required information in an appropriate form such as diagrams, reports, or tables.

A few examples:
  • a shop asking customers to fill in an answer slip processes data;
  • a hotel offering the possibility of online reservation also processes data if it requires guest names, the dates of their stay and their credit card number.
